Rumor Roundup: Vermette, Glencross and Petry deals close

Arizona Coyotes center Antoine Vermette still tops the list of best available player on the trade market. Prized for his two-way skills and ability to play center or wing, interest remains high in the 32-year-old forward.

The Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch links Vermette to the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers and Boston Bruins, suggesting the Pittsburgh Penguins could also get into the bidding.

ESPN.com’s Pierre LeBrun reports the New York Rangers are keeping an eye on Vermette. After the Chicago Blackhawks lost superstar winger Patrick Kane to a broken left clavicle, LeBrun claims the Blackhawks are looking at Vermette. A knee injury has sidelined Bruins center David Krejci four-to-six weeks, prompting LeBrun’s colleague Joe McDonald to cite Vermette as a short-term replacement.

CSNNE.com’s Joe Haggerty concurs, though he expects the asking price will be a first-round pick and a top prospect. If so, Haggerty suggests the Bruins could try widening the scope of the trade in hopes of adding a Coyotes defenseman like Zbynek Michalek or Keith Yandle as part of the return. Such a move, however, could force the cash-strapped Bruins to shed salary.

NBC Sports’ Dhiren Mahiban recently cited a radio interview by Coyotes GM Don Maloney saying he wasn’t impressed with the offers he’s received for tradeable assets like Vermette. “We’d just like a little bit more than is being offered right now,” said Maloney.

Don’t be surprised if Maloney waits until deadline day to move Vermette in hopes of boosting his traede value.

GLENCROSS DEAL HEATING UP FOR FLAMES

The trade rumors are heating up for Calgary Flames left wing Curtis Glencross. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports the St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers are believed watching the 32-year-old Glencross closely. The Anaheim Ducks, Chicago Blackhawks, Los Angeles Kings, Nashville Predators and Tampa Bay Lightning are reportedly on his list of preferred trade destinations.

Friedman claims the Washington Capitals aren’t on Glencross’ list but he thinks he could be a good fit with them. Sportsnet 590 The Fan’s Andrew Walker claims the Capitals are in fact closing in on a deal for Glencross, who is willing to waive his no-trade clause to join them.

With the Blackhawks having lost winger Kane to injury, they could also get into the hunt for Glencross. The Ducks and Lightning are reportedly seeking defensive depth so they’re unlikely to make a pitch for the Flames winger. The Kings’ recent acquisition of defenseman Andrej Sekeraprobably takes them out of the trade market. The Predators could use a top-six winger but it’s not a pressing need.

A possible stumbling block could be the return sought by the Flames. It was initially believed they would prefer draft picks or prospects, but Friedman believes they could seek a player to help them reach the playoffs this season.

SEKERA TRADE SETS TABLE FOR PETRY DEAL

Edmonton Oilers defenseman Jeff Petry remains a notable trade candidate leading up to the trade deadline. Oilers management attempted to re-sign the 27-year-old but he intends to test the free-agent market. He’s expected to be moved before the deadline.

Petry is a right-handed defenseman, a most-prized commodity in this year’s trade market. With Sekera being dealt to the Kings and Arizona Coyotes’ rearguard Michalek sidelined by concussion symptoms, there could be increased interest in Petry. The Anaheim Ducks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning could pursue him.

The Edmonton Journal’s Bruce McCurdy wonders if the Blackhawks could be a logical destination. They’re reportedly seeking an affordable playoff rental blueliner. Newsday’s Steve Zipay believesPetry will be too expensive for the Rangers.

THN Trade Deadline preview: Metropolitan Division

With the Eastern Conference about as wide open as it gets in the parity-laden NHL, the trade deadline could be huge in the Metropolitan Division. Who knows if, come deadline day, a GM from one of the three main contenders swings a deal that changes their team’s fate.

The New York Islanders made their biggest splash in the off-season, trading for blueliners Johnny Boychuk and Nick Leddy, the latter of whom was signed to a seven-year extension on Tuesday. The New York Rangers are right at the top of the standings thanks to a red hot Rich Nash. And the Pittsburgh Penguins… well, the Penguins have two guys by the name of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin who can be game breakers at any time. But don’t count out the Capitals.

Even the lowly Carolina Hurricanes and Columbus Blue Jackets are making some noise heading into the deadline, which could make the Metropolitan extremely active come deadline day.

New York Islanders

The Islanders definitely looked primed to make the playoffs this season, leading the Metropolitan Division, ahead of the Rangers and Penguins? That’s exactly where the Islanders find themselves heading into the deadline and it has caught everyone by surprise.

Because of the injury to Kyle Okposo – a detached retina – expect the Islanders to go looking for a top-six forward, if anything. And Boychuk may be headed for unrestricted free agency, but don’t expect the Islanders to ship him off. Both sides are likely going to work until the final moment on a new deal.

Prominent UFAs: Lubomir Visnovsky ($4.75 million), Boychuk ($3.367 million)

Key RFAs: Brock Nelson, Anders Lee, Matt Donovan, Thomas Hickey

Likely to move: The Islanders are ready to compete now, so expect prospects and picks to go the other way in any deal the Isles make.

Needs: Top-six forward

Possibilities: Tomas Fleischmann (FLA), Jaromir Jagr (NJD), Michael Ryder (NJD), Curtis Glencross(CGY)

Hot rumor: Daniel Winnik has been brought up by ESPN’s Katie Strang as someone the Isles may pursue as a depth addition.

Salary Cap room: $5.6 million

New York Rangers

A Stanley Cup finalist last season, the Rangers have themselves back in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race and could have home ice advantage in the first round. Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist is going to need to get healthy before the Rangers make their playoff push, but once he’s back in the lineup New York will be set.

Add to Lundqvist a Rick Nash that is absolutely terrorizing goaltenders and the Rangers are going to be back competing for the Cup this season. If anything, the Rangers will shop for a depth defenseman.

Prominent UFAs: Martin St. Louis ($5.625 million), Mats Zuccarello ($3.5 million), Lee Stempniak($900k)

Key RFAs: Derek Stepan, Carl Hagelin, J.T. Miller, John Moore

Likely to move: As Matt Larkin pointed out in the Trade Deadline issue, with so many RFAs and a loaded D corps, Moore is ripe to move.

Needs: Depth defenseman

Possibilities: Andrej Sekera (CAR), Zybnek Michalek (ARI), Jan Hejda (COL)

Hot rumor: The Rangers are pretty interested in Calgary’s Curtis Glencross and, with he and the Flames on the way to separating, there could be a fit there.

Salary Cap room: $1.25 million

Pittsburgh Penguins

The Penguins fatal flaw is depth and if they’re looking for anything at the deadline, it’s improving their depth. Of course they’ve got Crosby and Malkin, and the acquisition of David Perron will help, but adding one more piece up front and another on the blueline could put the Penguins over the top.

Marc-Andre Fleury is playing some of the best hockey of his career and leads the league in shutouts, and is top 10 in goals-against average, save percentage and wins. However, Olli Maatta is out for the year, so replacing him will be key to the Penguins’ success.

Prominent UFAs: Steve Downie ($1 million), Blake Comeau ($700k), Maxim Lapierre ($1.2 million),Paul Martin ($5 million), Christian Ehrhoff ($4 million)

Key RFAs: Beau Bennett, Robert Bortuzzo

Likely to move: Exchanging bottom-six players, borderline NHL prospects and picks could be the play for GM Jim Rutherford

Needs: Depth defense

Possibilities: Jeff Petry (EDM), Jaromir Jagr (NJD), Chris Stewart (BUF)

Hot rumor: Former Pittsburgh Penguin and current Carolina Hurricane Jordan Staal has been discussed as a possible target for the Penguins, but it’s unlikely to happen.

Salary Cap room: $791k

Washington Capitals

With Barry Trotz behind the bench, the Capitals have shored up their defensive play, Braden Holtbyis having the best season of his career and the duo of Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom is as good as it gets for present-day scoring tandems.

The story of the Ovechkin-led Capitals has been teams with all the potential to make a deep run but that have failed to get out of the second round and into the Eastern Conference final. If this team can shore up their offense and compliment their dynamic duo with another scoring forward, they could be in business.

Prominent UFAs: Joel Ward ($3 million), Eric Fehr ($1.5 million), Jay Beagle ($900k), Mike Green($6.1 million), John Erskine ($1.96 million)

Key RFAs: Evgeny Kuznetsov, Marcus Johansson, Braden Holtby

Likely to move: Mike Green, prospects and draft picks are the three things the Capitals could potentially move for their big haul at the deadline. Green is only going to move if it comes at the right price, however.

Needs: Top-six forward

Possibilities: Tomas Fleischmann (FLA), Chris Stewart (BUF), Curtis Glencross (CGY), Michael Ryder (NJD), Jiri Tlusty (CAR), Jaromir Jagr (NJD)

Hot rumor: NHL.com’s Dan Rosen could see the Capitals pursuing Edmonton Oilers winger Jordan Eberle.

Salary Cap room: $2.075 million

Philadelphia Flyers

Philadelphia is charging hard. They’re 4-2-4 over their last 10 games, have been getting solid goaltending since the all-star break and they’re only four points out of a playoff spot. By the end of the week, it stands to reason that the Flyers could be right on top of the Bruins in the Eastern Conference wild-card race.

GM Ron Hextall has said he won’t go out of his way at the deadline to buy and that he is against mortgaging the team’s future for a short run in the postseason, but that doesn’t mean the Flyers will stand pat. If they fall further out of the race, the Flyers could even become sellers.

Prominent UFAs: Chris VandeVelde ($575k), Pierre-Edouard Bellemare ($600k), Kimmo Timonen($3.5 million), Ray Emery ($1 million)

Key RFAs: Michael Del Zotto

Likely to move: If the Flyers slide out of the playoff race, look for Timonen to be dealt to a contender. He may be 39 and coming off blood clots that have sidelined him for most of the year, but he can still be effective. Braydon Coburn and Nicklas Grossmann could draw interest if Philadelphia sells.

Needs: Prospects, especially on the blueline, and picks.

Possibilities: Jeff Petry (EDM), Andrej Sekera (CAR), Keith Yandle (ARI)

Hot rumor: The Flyers re-signing of Nick Schultz makes Coburn and Grossmann ever more expendable, writes Sam Carchidi.

Salary Cap room: $2.18 million

New Jersey Devils

The Devils are loaded with veteran forwards that would be able to help teams looking to buy a top-six forward, and that’s exactly the kind of player you will see New Jersey ship out at the deadline.

New Jersey has been far from good this season and they need to get Cory Schneider some help on defense and add some young, NHL ready prospects that can help them. However, they probably don’t have the assets to make that a reality shy of moving one of their young defensemen.

Prominent UFAs: Jaromir Jagr ($5.5 million), Michael Ryder ($3.5 million), Martin Havlat ($1.5 million), Jordin Tootoo ($550k), Steve Bernier ($516k), Scott Gomez ($390k), Marek Zidlicky ($4 million), Bryce Salvador ($3.17 million), Peter Harrold ($615k)

Key RFAs: Adam Larsson, Eric Gelinas

Likely to move: Jagr has involved in rumors for weeks, Ryder could help a top-six, Havlat is cheap and could have some upside, Gomez has been scoring and the old, immobile defensemen Zidlicky and Salvador could be worth some late-round picks if dealt.

Needs: Prospects and picks will be really valuable for New Jersey going forward.

Possibilities: New Jersey sends all their UFAs packing and gets some high- to mid-round draft picks.

Hot rumor: GM Lou Lamoriello doesn’t want a full rebuild, so don’t expect Larsson to be going anywhere or for their to be a run on young Devils traded.

Salary Cap room: $2.88 million

Columbus Blue Jackets

Columbus’ season was derailed by injuries, so expect the Blue Jackets to use the injury-riddled off-year to stock up whatever prospects or players they feel they need for future seasons now. The high draft selection will help the team and add to a young core and that’s about all Columbus really needs to do.

Rumors have surfaced that James Wisniewski is available and any trade involving the blueliner could net Columbus a second- or third-round draft pick, which would be a good get for the Blue Jackets. If they add a prospect to it, they might be able to get a prospect and a late draft pick.

Prominent UFAs: Mark Letestu ($1.25 million), Jack Skille ($750k), Jordan Leopold ($1.392 million)

Key RFAs: Cam Atkinson, Matt Calvert, Cody Goloubef

Likely to move: Wisniewski ($5.5 million) is most likely, but don’t sleep on the Blue Jackets also trading RFAs Atkinson and Calvert. Shipping out young, NHL ready players could land Columbus solid pieces for the future.

Needs: Draft picks will be what the Blue Jackets are after.

Possibilities: Wisniewski, Atkinson and Calvert gone with at least a couple of second- or third-round picks added to their coffers.

Hot rumor: No trade of Wisniewski has happened yet, but that Jarmo Kekalainen has had to address it to the media likely means he’s working hard on it.

Salary Cap room: $5.42 million

Carolina Hurricanes

No team in the division has more ready to move pieces that could bring back more than Carolina.

GM Ron Francis has his chance to put his stamp on the direction of the Hurricanes for years to come, and a solid trade deadline is the first step. There’s going to be players leaving Carolina on March 2 and if Francis is able to make some savvy moves, he could expedite the Hurricanes’ rebuild.

Prominent UFAs: Jiri Tlusty ($2.95 million), Jay McClement ($1 million), Patrick Dwyer ($900k), Andrej Sekera ($2.75 million), Tim Gleason ($1.2 million)

Key RFAs: Michal Jordan, Chris Terry, Riley Nash, Andrej Nestrasil

Likely to move: If you were to break the players into three tiers – with tier one being the most likely to move – Sekera and Tlusty would be tier one, McClement would be tier two and Gleason would be tier three.

Needs: Like many struggling clubs, the Hurricanes simply need prospects and picks.

Possibilities: Sekera has many suitors and is going to be one of the biggest prizes on deadline day at this point.

Hot rumor: The biggest rumor saw Jordan Staal potentially getting dealt back to the Penguins, but that was squashed. Now it’s a matter of shipping players to the highest bidder.

Salary Cap room: $3.82 million

Rumor Roundup: Next moves for Maple Leafs, Glencross trade on the horizon

    Lyle Richardson

By: Lyle Richardson on February 25, 2015

Filed under: Boston Bruins, Calgary Flames, NHL, Rumor Roundup,Toronto Maple Leafs

    Toronto Maple Leafs' Joffrey Lupul

    Joffrey Lupul (Getty Images)

As the NHL trade deadline draws nearer, expectation is growing over possible moves by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Their mid-February trading of Cody Franson and Mike Santorelli to the Nashville Predators is considered the first of several significant moves as the Leafs begin a long-overdue rebuild.

The Toronto Sun’s Rob Longley reports “many players”, led by winger Daniel Winnik, center Tyler Bozak, defenseman Roman Polak and perhaps goaltender Jonathan Bernier, could be playing elsewhere soon.

It’s widely assumed the 29-year-old Winnik is the next to go. TSN’s Darren Dreger believes there’s a 100-percent chance he’ll will be gone by the deadline, claiming the Leafs seek a second-round pick and either a third rounder or a prospect. The Winnipeg Jets are reportedly interested and there’s talk their unsigned free agent Alex Burmistrov (currently playing in the KHL) is being floated as a trade chip.

Dreger also thinks there’s a good chance Leafs winger Joffrey Lupul could be traded at the deadline or during the off-season. If the oft-injured Lupul can stay healthy, Dreger claims several clubs could try to acquire him on deadline day.

Sportsnet590′s Andrew Walker reports sources saying the Leafs are shopping the 31-year-old Lupul. Based on the Montreal Canadiens’ previous interest, Walker speculates they could be a suitor. However, the Canadiens recent acquisition of Devante Smith-Pelly suggests they’ll be looking at other options. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun doesn’t believe Lupul is a fit with the Habs.

It’s not just Lupul’s injury history that could scare off interest, but also his contract. With three years remaining at $5.25-million per season, he’s an expensive gamble for clubs seeking a top-six winger.

KREJCI INJURY UPS BRUINS NEED FOR TOP-SIX HELP

The Boston Bruins’ playoff hopes suffered a significant blow when top-line center David Krejci was sidelined four-to-six weeks to a knee injury. This puts more pressure upon Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli to swing a deal or two to save their season.

ESPN Boston’s Joe McDonald notes Krejci’s cap hit is $5.25 million, suggesting Chiarelli could get some cap relief for possible short-term acquisitions by placing the 28-year-old center on LTIR. He speculates the Bruins could pursue Arizona Coyotes center Antoine Vermette.

If call-up center Ryan Spooner helps cover off Krejci’s absence, McDonald also suggests Chiarelli could continue shopping for a right wing. He thinks Winnipeg Jets winger Michael Frolik might be available. That’s unlikely, as the Jets are also struggling to secure a playoff spot and lack depth up front. A more likely option is Buffalo Sabres right wing Chris Stewart, who’s been lined to the Bruins in the rumor mill for some time.

    FLAMES’ GLENCROSS SUBMITS HIS LIST

Speculation persists Calgary Flames left wing Curtis Glencross could be on the move by deadline day. The 32-year-old is eligible for unrestricted free agency in July. Having accepted a hometown discount on his current contract, Glencross reportedly seeks a more expensive deal which is too rich for Flames management to absorb.

Glencross possesses a full no-trade clause and was recently asked to submit a list of preferred destination to management. The Calgary Sun’s Wes Gilbertson cites Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman’s claim the Anaheim Ducks, Chicago Blackhawks, Los Angeles Kings, Nashville Predators and Tampa Bay Lightning are on that list.

It’s rumored the New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins have interest in Glencross, but no word if they’re also on that list. Given the limited depth in available talent heading into this year’s trade deadline, the Flames might land a second-round pick and a prospect as a return.

    On Glencross...
It sounds like the Capitals may be leading this right now...I have heard Montreal too, but not as much since the Sekac trade...Pittsburgh is also eying him.

    On Bozak...
Keep an eye on Chicago I was told. It will be very interesting to see what happens with Patrick Kane going on IR. Money opens up.

    On Briere...
On player there is under-the-radar interest in because of his playoff history is Danny Briere.. I have heard Anaheim and possibly the Islanders.

    On Jagr...
It really is looking like Jagr will be on the move again. The latest rumors I heard were St. Louis and Nashville. Both make sense...

    NHL Rumor Mill – February 24, 2015

    by Lyle Richardson | Feb 24, 2015 | Rumors | 165 comments

Latest on Joffrey Lupul, Jordan Staal, James Wisniewski, Jeff Petry and many more.

    TSN updated trade bait list.

TSN: updated their list of top-ten NHL trade bait heading toward the March 2 trade deadline. Arizona’s Antoine Vermette tops the list, followed by Carolina’s Andrej Sekera, Edmonton’s Jeff Petry, Toronto’s Daniel Winnik, Arizona’s Zbynek Michalek, Buffalo’s Chris Stewart, Florida’s Sean Bergenheim, Carolina’s Jiri Tlusty, Calgary’s Curtis Glencross and Colorado’s Jan Hejda.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Not really an enticing list of talent. All of them are second tier at best. If those are the only notable players moved on deadline day, it’ll  be  a letdown compared to the big names who were on the move last season.

Lupul and Winnik on the move soon?

Maple Leafs reportedly shopping Joffrey Lupul.

Maple Leafs reportedly shopping Joffrey Lupul.

TSN.CA: Darren Dreger reports there’s a 60 percent chance Toronto Maple Leafs winger Joffrey Lupul could be dealt leading up to the trade deadline and into this summer. If the oft-injured Lupul can stay healthy, Dreger claims there are several clubs with interest in him who could try to land by the deadline. Dreger also considers Leafs forward Daniel Winnik 100 percent likely to be dealt at the deadline. The Leafs seek a second-round pick and either a third-rounder or a prospect. The Winnipeg Jets are reportedly interested, and Alex Burmistrov’s name has been floated as a possible trade chip.

SPORTSNET: Luke Fox cites Sportsnet590 host Andrew Walker claiming the Leafs are actively shopping Lupul. The Montreal Canadiens are one club linked to Lupul in the rumor mill.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Given the uncertainty over next season’s salary cap, Lupul’s $5.25 million per season contract running through 2017-18 and his injury history, I think an NHL general manager would be insane to acquire him. Yes, when Lupul’s healthy he’s an effective top-six winger, but he’s constantly injured, and his contract carries too much salary for too long. Lupul’s not worth the risk.

Updates on Jordan Staal, James Wisniewski and Jeff Petry.

NEWSOBSERVER.COM: Chip Alexander reports Carolina Hurricanes GM Ron Francis disputed media reports out of Pittsburgh that the Penguins are interested in reacquiring center Jordan Staal. “We’re not moving Jordan Staal,” said Francis.

NBC SPORTS: Dhiren Mahiban cites a report from The Columbus Dispatch’s Aaron Portzline claiming two different sources state the Blue Jackets are trying to move defenseman James Wisniewski by the trade deadline. Wisniewski was a healthy scratch during the Jackets game against the New York Rangers on Sunday, prompting speculation he might be dealt, though GM Jarmo Kekalainen claimed no deal was imminent.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Jim Matheson suggests the Oilers should rest defenseman Jeff Petry, who’s nursing sore ribs, rather than continue playing him leading up to the trade deadline and risk aggravating the injury.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: No surprise Francis denied the Staal trade speculation. Jordan obviously wasn’t about to be moved at the trade deadline. Still, if brother Eric decides he’ll test the 2016 free agent market this summer, Francis could try to move him, which could also affect Jordan’s future in Carolina…Looks like Kekalainen was only telling half the story regarding the Wisniewski trade speculation. More like,  “No deal is imminent…but we’re working on one.” Wisniewski’s a right-handed shot which is a valuable commodity, but his cap hit is $5.5 million annually for two more seasons….There’s sufficient interest in Petry so the Oilers don’t have to showcase him now. If he needs a few days to recuperate from his rib injury, it might be wise to shut him down until deadline day.

Latest on the Bruins, Senators and Capitals.

ESPN BOSTON: Joe McDonald reports David Krejci’s knee injury puts pressure on Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli to fill the void. Should Krejci go on LTIR until season’s end as expected, it’ll provide the cap-strapped Bruins with some relief (he’s earning $5.25 million this season) to pursue a short-term replacement. McDonald suggests Arizona’s Antoine Vermette as a trade target. If callup Ryan Spooner plays well at center, McDonald suggest perhaps targeting Winnipeg Jets winger Michael Frolik.

OTTAWA SUN: Don Brennan reports the Senators could unload forwards Colin Greening and Erik Condra by the trade deadline.

CSN WASHINGTON:  Chuck Gormley reports the Washington Capitals need a top-line right wing, second-line center and blue line depth. For right wing trade targets, he suggests Edmonton’s Jordan Eberle, New Jersey’s Jaromir Jagr, Carolina’s Jiri Tlusty and Buffalo’s Chris Stewart. For centers, Toronto’s Daniel Winnik and Arizona’s Antoine Vermette. For blueliners, Carolina’s Andrej Sekera, Edmonton’s Jeff Petry and New Jersey’s Marek Zidlicky.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Coyotes are reportedly seeking a first-round pick and top prospect for Vermette, which likely prices him out of the Bruins and Capitals market. The Jets seek a top-nine forward so I doubt they’ll trade Frolik to the Bruins…Condra is a UFA and likely has more value at this year’s trade deadline than Greening, who has term left on his deal…The Capitals stand a better chance of landing Tlusty, Stewart, Winnik or Petry.

No significant moves for Canucks, Islanders and Wild?

TSN: Darren Dreger reports the Vancouver Canucks are confident Eddie Lack can fill in for sidelined starter Ryan Miller and have no plans to shop for a goalie. Dreger claims they’re still on the hunt for goal scoring.

NEW YORK POST: Brett Cyrgalis reports sources claim Islanders GM Garth Snow won’t be pursuing a major deal leading up to the trade deadline and could stand pat.

STARTRIBUNE.COM: Michael Russo reports Minnesota Wild GM Chuck Fletcher believes his club’s priority is its health and not the trade deadline. While several players are sidelined by injuries, others (Justin Fontaine, Jordan Schroeder, Matt Dumba) have stepped up to fill the void. The Wild have won six of eight games since those injuries.
